Age-related Macular Degeneration

Have you been experiencing vision changes lately, especially in your central vision? You may be one of the many individuals dealing with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD can significantly impact central vision, making everyday tasks like reading and driving challenging. Our team provides personalized care to help preserve your vision and maintain your quality of life.

What is age-related macular degeneration?

AMD is a progressive eye condition that affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. As we age, the macula may deteriorate, leading to blurred or distorted vision. There are two main types of AMD:

  • Dry AMD: This form develops slowly as the macula thins and breaks down over time, leading to gradual vision loss.
  • Wet AMD: Less common but more severe, wet AMD occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the macula and leak blood and fluid, causing rapid vision loss if left untreated.

Diagnosing age-related macular degeneration

Diagnosing AMD typically involves a comprehensive eye exam that includes a visual acuity test to detect signs of vision loss. Our eye doctor may also recommend additional tests such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) to get a closer look at your retina and assess the severity of your condition. Early detection is key when managing AMD, so regular eye exams are crucial for those at risk.

Treatment for age-related macular degeneration

While there is no cure for AMD, treatment can help manage the progression of the disease and improve your quality of life. For dry AMD, lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet high in antioxidants, and taking supplements like vitamins C and E may slow its progression. For wet AMD, one common treatment approach is anti-VEGF injections, which help reduce abnormal blood vessel growth in the retina. Another option is photodynamic therapy, which uses a light-sensitive drug to target abnormal blood vessels in the macula.
